About the AAUW
The American Association of University Women is a national organization that promotes equity for all women and girls, lifelong education, and positive societal change. The AAUW offers scholarships, action for gender equity, and support of personal and professional growth, community leadership, and friendship. Members enjoy the opportunity to meet other professional women in our regular meetings and social gatherings geared toward their special interests. Our monthly meetings feature speakers discussing current events and women's issues, as well as delicious meals.
AAUW Orlando/Winter Park was founded in 1928, and now includes members from throughout Central Florida. Our branch has been growing at over 20% per year since 2000. Our member come from 5 continents and are diverse ethnically, politically, and professionally.
Orlando AAUW Awards -
The University of Central Florida was awarded a grant from AAUW as the result of a partnership between our branch and UCF, and the expertise of member Dr. Leslie Lieberman, to study sexual harassment on campus. See UCF grant page.
1) Received the Florida Finest Award for mid to large size branches for 2005-06. This is the top award given by the state for branch achievement and support to the AAUW mission and its funds. The award also recognizes our increase in membership moves us to the next higher grouping. The branch was honored for the largest membership increase in the state, the 4th largest contribution in Florida to the Legal Advocacy Fund, and top ten in the state for contributions to the Educational Foundation.
2) The Florida Department of Education and the Florida Education Foundation awarded the Orlando/Winter Park branch of AAUW with the 2004 Commissioner's Business Recognition Award for significant impact on education in Florida
3) Orange County Education Award for partnership with Orange County's PACE Center for Girls 1998-2005.
4) 2004 Platinum Award, the highest honor from National AAUW - 21st Century recognition award for innovative programming, promoting education and integrating technology.
Education
AAUW is dedicated to education and with this as our primary focus, we offer annual collegiate scholarships. We also contribute to the Educational Foundation, which supports graduate students and funds national research studies. We asssist the Orlando PACE Center for Girls and the Winter Park Day Nursery, as well as provide local scholarships.
An AAUW Memorial Scholarship was initiated in memory of Merle Coalter and has been established at Valencia Community College. It will be awarded to a female student majoring in business, math or science.
AAUW History
Founded in 1881, the AAUW now represents over 150,000 college graduates across the United States. The Association is also part of the International Federation of University Women (IFUW) with members in 67 countries around the world. At state, national and international levels, AAUW values and seeks members of every race, creed, age, national origin, sexual orientation, and level of physical ability.
